Heart Disease

Heart disease is the #1 killer. Every 37 seconds, an American dies as a result of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Many factors account for the risk of this illness. However, for most of these factors it is almost entirely "controllable." Cardiovascular health today continues to affect almost 50% of our population.

The key factors contributing to this disease are:

Smoking – Smokers have a two- to three-fold increased risk of dying.

Cholesterol Levels – The plaque that builds up in the artery walls decreasing blood circulation increases the risk of CVD. A 10 percent decrease in cholesterol can result in a 30 percent decrease in CVD.

High Blood Pressure – Reduces life expectancy and is a major key factor in heart attacks.

Diabetes – At least 65% of people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke (a sudden interruption of blood supply to the brain).

Overweight/Obesity – The biggest factor in increasing cardiovascular disease and inducing diabetes.

Having two or more of any of these factors greatly increases the risk of being diagnosed. By having a nutritional program containing Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, walnuts, canola and soybean oils) helps reduce the risk of blood clots forming, as well as reducing the risk of abnormal heart rhythms and lowering triglyceride levels. Studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acid supplements can reduce heart attacks and strokes. Individuals with existing cardio-health problems may not get enough omega-3 through diet alone. This is where a nutritional supplement program is critical.

Phytosterols (aka plant sterols), along with fiber, help fight the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract. Phytosertols are found in many plants, including soybeans, nuts and some vegetable oils. This helps lower the LDL or "bad cholesterol," therefore lowering the risk.

Antioxidants

Any substance that may prevent organ damage by scavenging free radicals is an antioxidant. Potent antioxidants such as CoQ10 and anthocyanins nuetralize free radicals, cell-damaging compounds which are blamed for the development of this disease.

CoQ10, or co-enzymeQ10 plays a vital role in the heart's ability to pump effectively. It is found naturally in the energy-producing center of the cells. Found in the highest concentrations of the heart, CoQ10 is known to boost energy and the immune system while it fights free radicals. Epidemiologic evidence in humans shows a gradual decline in CoQ10 levels after the age of 20. A supplement containing CoQ10 is proven to help fight CVD, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and congestive heart failure.

Statins prescribed to lower cholesterol inhibit the body's ability to produce CoQ10, which can lead to deficiencies of this nutrient.

Research shows anthocyanins help reduce the risk of heart disease by inhibiting cholesterol absosrption and by helping to prevent antherosclerosis – the clogging of the arteries with plaque that leads to heart attacks and strokes. This type of antioxidant provides the deep, rich color to many fruits. By consuming several servings daily of fruit, you are providing the natural intake to help prevent heart disease.

In February 2005
Reliv International, Inc. (Nasdaq/NM – RELV), an international food science company, held a conference to introduce Reliv CardioSentials®, a new dietary supplement shown to be safe and effective through an independent study.

Reliv CardioSentials® contains 1500 mg of phytosterols per serving. Foods containing at least 400 mg of phytosterols taken twice a day (800 mg total), as part of a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Reliv CardioSentials was developed by Reliv scientists to help address some of the multiple factors causing the development of heart disease, including the complex balances of “good” and “bad” cholesterol levels, as well as blood glucose levels and oxidative stress.

“Total heart health requires a multi-dimensional approach that addresses the array of factors,” said Carl W. Hastings, Ph.D. and Reliv Vice President of Research and Development.

The trial was conducted by Dr. Joseph Vinson, Ph.D., a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Scranton. The 16-week randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study (the gold standard of clinical testing) aimed to determine the safety and effectiveness of Reliv CardioSentials® in reducing those key risk factors. The summary report on the clinical trial states that the overall effect of the program for participants in the study was a significant reduction in the 10-year risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Specifically, the study concluded that Reliv CardioSentials® significantly decreased total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides in test subjects with high cholesterol. In addition, the product increased HDL (good) cholesterol and reduced blood glucose levels.

The study tested two groups—individuals taking statin (cholesterol-lowering) medications and individuals not taking statins. Both groups experienced significant antioxidant benefits from Reliv CardioSentials. Other findings concluded the following results:

For those taking statin medications, the product caused no adverse interaction with statin medication and resulted in improvements in their average risk factor because of a decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol).

For those not taking statins, a daily serving of Reliv CardioSentials® significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose, and raised HDL (good) cholesterol. It significantly decreased the overall risk factor for heart disease.

If you're serious about improving your cardio-health condition, listen to this video:

"How can we play a role in preventing heart disease?" Seeking more knowledge about the symptoms of heart disease is a continuing process. In our opinion, the best way to treat a problem is to PREVENT a problem. Nutrition is a key to preventing heart disease. Symptoms of heart disease will get worse with poor diets that lack the micronutrients necessary to maintain healthy cell membranes, like antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents.
