Obesity
Obesity has become a national health epidemic. Along with heart disease, cancer and diabetes, this disease has become the fourth major health problem. It is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30% or greater of one's ideal weight. BMI is calculated from an indivduals weight and height, and provides an assessment of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) studies the prevelance of this disease in America, and in 2007 released a study entitled: "Obesity Among Adults in the United States..." revealing that more than one-third of U.S. adults, over 72 million people were obese in 2005 and 2006. This includes 33.3 percent of men and 35.3 percent of women. The CDC also further states that: approximately 40 percent of men ages 40 to 59 years old are obese, compared with 28 percent of men aged 20 to 39, and 32 percent of men aged 60 and older. These statistics may seem overwhelming, however, it is the #1 "preventable" disease.
In June 2009, the U.S. Department of Health reported that obesity in individuals increased in 23 states throughout the U.S. No state recorded any decreases. As a society, we are becoming fatter and fatter with the combination of nutrient deficient foods, along with a sedentary lifestyle of little or no exercise.
Weight gain is directly influenced by nutrition. When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight during a lifetime, the bottom line is nutrition counts! We eat to live, but in a world where drive-thru's and frozen meals dominate our kitchen table, our body is not receiving adequate and balanced nutrition. Thus, our bodies are being overfed with calories, yet we are still undernourished. Within this excess of "empty calories" most people are not getting the recommended intake of calcium and iron from fruits and vegetables but instead consume foods high in carbohydrates and fat and thus add more weight to their body. Just "eating less" will not solve the problem of weight. Eating the right foods that provide nutrients that our bodies require are essential. Low carbohydrate foods avoid of refined flour, sugar and high fructose corn syrup will significantly reduce the amount of calories you eat each day. Nutrition is an intrical web of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and herbs, in which each component has a distinct and opportune ability to maintain a quality of life. Along with a regimen of daily exercise, individuals who are obese can lose weight, become healthier and decrease the risk of other illnesses. Obesity speeds up your pace towards a fatal heart attack destination, learn about the complication of obesity and how you can reduce the risk of having a heart attack.
Weight loss is vital to good health
Reasons to Lose Weight Go Beyond Good Looks
Every year this dreadful disease is affecting more people at a younger age than ever before. When it affects young kids or teenagers this problem carries over into adulthood further increasing the risk of other health issues (see below) later on. The Journal Of The American Dietetic Association's February 2009 issue analyzes excessive weight gain in our youth. Health statistics report rates of overweight youth have increased dramatically during the past 2 decades. Children obtain a large fraction of their food energy while at school. A study of 2228 students from elementary, middle and high school ages who participate in their school's meal program were chosen from various geographical regions of the country to participate in a measurement of their BMI (body mass index). The racial makeup of the nationalities were broken down to Non-Hispanic white; Non-Hispanic black; Hispanic; & Other(Asian & Middle Eastern). The results are astounding! Prevalence of weight by School Type:
Elementary School(706 students)
38% overweight & 22% obese
Middle School (761 students)
41% overweight & 25% obese
High School (761 students)
38% overweight & 23% obese -1
Even with margin of error of 2%, these statistics strongly demonstrate a critical health problem with our youth. It is strongly suggested that a program of nutritional education awareness along with 30 minutes of physical activity daily helps decrease the risks of weight gain.
The crisis behind being overweight is not centered around an altered physical appearance, but rather, the health consequences that are a direct result of this health problem.
The health risks associated with being overweight is that it usually leads to other diseases such as heart disease, bone and joint dysfunction or diabetes. By participating in a nutrition wellness program, not only do you avoid the embarrasment of being overweight, you minimize all others risks that lead to an unhealthy lifestyle.

Bounty of Weight Loss Health Benefits
Brain. A recent study found that being overweight causes brain degeneration resulting in less brain tissue than in people with normal weight. This brain tissue loss depletes your cognitive reserves and puts you at a much greater risk of Alzheimer's and other diseases that attack the brain. The bottom line: You can greatly reduce your risk for Alzheimer's by eating healthy and keeping your weight under control.
Blood Pressure. Losing even 10 pounds can lower your blood pressure. Losing weight has the biggest effect on those who are overweight and already have hypertension.
Blood Sugar. Losing weight can lower blood sugar levels and allow some people with type 2 diabetes to reduce their medication.
Joint Pain. Overweight women have nearly 4 times the risk of knee osteoarthritis, a common joint disorder; for overweight men the risk is 5 times greater. However, studies have shown that for every 11 pounds a woman loses, her risk of knee arthritis drops by more than 50%. Similar benefits can also be seen in men.
